The human body consists of billions of cells. New cells are continuously formed in our body to assure growth and replacement of old or damaged cells.
These cell “life-death” processes are strictly controlled by the immune system and other mechanisms and they occur in an orderly fashion that assures optimum health. During cell division and the formation of new cells, the surrounding external environment composed of collagen and other natural components needs to be temporarily dissolved to accommodate new growth and expansion. For this purpose, cells secrete collagen-digesting enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The secretion of these enzymes is biologically controlled so the stability and integrity of connective tissue is protected.
Certain natural compounds including vitamin C, lysine and green tea polyphenols, among others, play an important role in optimum synthesis and maintaining the natural stability of the extracellular matrix as well as in normal functioning of cells and their protection.
