Vegan Glucosamine

  • Non-Shellfish

DEVA™ Nutrition introduces corn-derived, 100% vegan glucosamine. All ingredients used in DEVA Glucosamine are plant and mineral-based. Most other glucosamine products on the market today are produced from animal sources; mainly from the outer skeletons of shellfish, which may cause allergic reactions in those with shellfish allergies, or a possible worsening of asthma symptoms.1

The body produces glucosamine naturally, and is necessary for normal joint health. Glucosamine is required by the body to build and maintain healthy tendons, cartilage, and ligaments.2 Osteoarthritis, a chronic disease that effects joints (especially the knees), can cause disability, most often in the elderly. There is a progressive loss of cartilage, along with bone deposits within the joint, which leads to stiffness and pain.3

The GAIT Trial (Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial), conducted by the National Institutes of Health, concluded that glucosamine may prevent the development of osteoarthritis or slow down its progression, and may help decrease joint pain.4 Medical treatment, which includes the use of dietary supplements such as glucosamine, may be as beneficial as arthroscopic surgery and physical therapy in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, according to another study.5 Studies are also being conducted to explore the use of glucosamine in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases,6 diabetes.7

The use of DEVA Glucosamine as a dietary supplement is safe; adverse effects are uncommon, and there are no reported significant drug interactions. However, people who take medications for diabetes, or blood thinners such as Coumadin, need to be cautious when taking glucosamine8; and women who are pregnant or nursing should not take glucosamine9.

Our Vegan Glucosamine is perfect for senior citizens, weekend athletes, or anyone seeking additional nutritional support for cartilage and joints. DEVA Glucosamine is perfect for vegans, vegetarians or people with shellfish allergies who would also like to benefit from glucosamine.

In order to provide peace-of-mind to our consumers, our products have been certified as 100% Vegan by the non-profit Vegan Society. This non-profit organization, which first coined the phrase "vegan," has a strict and detailed process for registering vegan products.

Glucosamine HCL vs Glucosamine Sulphate:

Stability: Glucosamine and glucosamine sulphate degrade easily, especially if damp. To try to overcome this manufacturers add either sodium or potassium chloride, in addition to the sulphate. This means that over two fifths (40%) of its weight may be made up of additives. To prevent further destruction, vitamin C can be added as a preservative and calcium carbonate as a desiccant. Some glucosamine sulphate preparations claim to be salt free when in fact they are actually SODIUM free. They still contain up to 25% potassium chloride. If they did not, they would degrade rapidly into a black mush. On the other hand glucosamine hydrochloride is naturally stable and requires no added salt or other preservatives.

Purity: Pure glucosamine sulphate can have as little as 59% 'active' glucosamine because of the chemically added sulphate and salt, whilst pure Glucosamine hydrochloride has up to 88%. DEVA Vegan Glucosamine hydrochloride  mg for mg, can contain up to a third more active glucosamine.

Where does glucosamine come from? Glucosamine sulphate is manufactured from glucosamine hydrochloride. Glucosamine hydrochloride can be obtained from any source of cartilage, commonly beef, chicken, pig, shark, clams, shrimp or even whale. Chondroitin can also obtained from these sources, and there are no plant altematives. DEVA Nutrition has specifically chosen an alternative source : corn,  thus making its glucosamine 100% animal-free.

Why choose DEVA's Glucosamine hydrochloride? Glucosamine is readily absorbed by the body and into cartilage. Glucosamine sulphate is converted by stomach acid into the hydrochloride before absorption. Scientific research has shown that glucosamine hydrochloride is used by cartilage. A true mg to mg comparison shows that the hydrochloride provides more glucosamine than the sulphate salt and this may be the reason why some people prefer to choose glucosamine hydrochloride.
