Vitamins and Mental Health

We have known for a very long time that the absence or a shortage of key vitamins and nutrients can lead to the onset of a variety of diseases of the body. It has taken us longer to come to what now seems like a commonsense conclusion that the vitamins found in a healthy diet – and in quality products from Bluebonnet, Pure Encapsulations and others – are important to our mental health as well.

In talking about Vitamins and Mental Health, the health experts at WebMD say, “Vitamins play a vital role in mental health. The absence of some vitamins and nutrients in your diet could lead to some mental health issues.”

Folic acid and the B vitamins are among the vitamins that WebMD highlights as being important to mental health.

Supporting Mental Health with B Vitamins

Vitamin B complex, which includes folate, can do wonders for your mental health. On the flip side, if you are not getting enough Vitamin B, you may find yourself forgetting things. In addition to affecting memory, a shortage of Vitamin B can contribute to cognitive impairment and dementia.

“Low levels of folate have been linked to depression. Vitamins supplements such as folic acid (a synthetic form of folate also known as vitamin B9) combined with antidepressants can boost relief in women,” WebMD’s experts say.

Dietary sources of folic acid include:

  • fortified bread and cereals
  • citrus fruits
  • leafy green vegetables
  • beans

There are additional ways that the B Vitamins support healthy brain function. For example, Vitamin B1(thiamin) helps the brain convert blood sugar into energy. According to WebMD, “This means that without it, the brain may not have enough energy to function normally.”

If you are looking for B Vitamins, we are proud to offer a number of options, including but not limited to the following:
